This short article examines the redesign of the Staples Web site. During the process the designers learned that visitors were suspicious of entering their ZIP code information until being informed about how doing that could help them with shipping information, that the search results had to be culled and organized more efficiently, and that reducing the account creation process from four pages to two reduced the number of customers who balked, among other things. The article also describes how Staples integrated its paper catalogues with its Web site.
