Customers often miss navigation elements and content if they have to scroll down to see them.

The term above the fold comes from the newspaper business because newspapers are folded in half when they are sold on the street. Newspapers know to put the most important stories above the fold of the front page to draw attention and drive sales. On the Web, above the fold refers to what your customers can see on your Web page without having to scroll down. Visitors do not always realize that they can scroll down, or that there is more information below. Therefore it makes sense to put all the vital links and content at the top.
