Use Higher Compression Ratios on Images

A common technique for reducing image file sizes, compression, is done automatically for you with GIF and PNG files. GIF and PNG use lossless compression, meaning that image file sizes are reduced without any loss in image quality.

In contrast, you must choose a compression rate with JPEG. The problem is that JPEG uses lossy compression, meaning that some of the image quality is sacrificed for smaller file sizes. In other words, the higher the compression rate, the smaller the file size but the lower the image quality. When you're dealing with JPEG files, you have to be careful because you can lose a lot of image quality as you keep working with it. One workaround is to save your image in a different file format and convert it to a JPEG when you're ready. Another is to keep older versions of your JPEG images so that you can always revert to one of higher quality.
