Understand the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Different Image File Formats

At this writing, the two most popular file formats for images are GIF and JPEG. GIF images are good for small icons. The GIF file format can have up to 256 colors. It supports transparency and can compress the image file size without losing any information. JPEG images are good for photograph-quality images. The JPEG file format can have several million colors, but it does not support transparency, and it throws away some data to get better compression.

A new file format that has recently emerged is PNG (Portable Network Graphics). Developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), PNG is an improvement on GIF and JPEG. PNG was created as an alternative to GIF because Unisys Corporation decided to enforce its patent on GIF, specifically on software tools that output it. The problem is that only the most recent Web browsers support PNG. Wait until more people have Web browsers that support PNG before switching to it.
