Move Slow, Large Files Off of Pages That Need to Be Fast

This approach advocates moving large image, audio, applet, and plug-in files to a separate, linked page. That way customers get a fast response, and they can preview the large file and decide whether they want it without having to download the whole thing. A good way to create FAST-DOWNLOADING IMAGES (L2) is to present a page of thumbnails, or small versions of the original image, each linked to larger versions.

The number of files that require transfer must be reduced on a page-by-page basis. Prioritize your site's pages, and then focus your efforts on making the most important pages faster. If your site has not yet been deployed, you will have to make an educated guess as to which pages are the most important. Likely candidates are the homepage and the pages supporting the most common tasks you expect visitors to want to do. If you already have a live site, analyze your server logs to find your most popular pages.
