Consider Combining Small Images That Are Close Together

If you design a page with lots of small images, it can take a long time to download because of the communication overhead of requesting and sending each image. Reduce the overall number of bytes that are downloaded by combining small images into a larger image (see Figure L2.8). If you use the small images as links, the larger image can be made clickable by the use of client-side image maps in the HTML. One trick to be aware of is entering the text name of the link as part of the image. See ACTION BUTTONS (K4) for an example.
