Make Clear Which Fields Are Required and Which Are Optional

A fifth approach to error prevention informs customers which fields are required so that they can concern themselves with the important information. These fields must be clearly marked with a symbol that is explained in a footnote (see Figure K12.6) or a text label such as required.

Figure K12.6. Prevent errors by indicating which fields are required. The site pictured here uses the asterisk for this purpose. It is important to explain the required symbol in a place where it will be read.
