Make Sure the Software Accepts Multiple Formats

A fourth approach to preventing errors in text input fields—slightly more complex from a programming standpoint—is to allow multiple kinds of formatting and have the computer figure out what the value should be. For example, a credit card field could let people type in credit card numbers with or without spaces. A phone field could allow all the different kinds of formatting for phone numbers. When the processing is straightforward and unambiguous, as with credit card numbers, you should allow flexible formatting.
