Test Link Names through Category Identification and Description

Use two related techniques—category identification and category description—to test the usefulness and usability of your link names, independent of visual design and layout.

In category identification, present recruited participants with a list of link names that would appear on a page. The links might be grouped together as they would on the Web page, but there is no other content or layout. Also give participants a set of tasks. For each task, ask them to select the link that they think will take them to the right page, and to rate the confidence of their choice on a scale of 1 to 3. This technique provides useful feedback about how well potential customers can map from a given task to the navigation provided on your Web page to complete the task. It also checks if potential customers can differentiate link names. Link names that are too similar will cause people to choose the wrong link. Category identification will help you spot this problem early in the design process.
