Create a Clear Form for New Addresses

If customers are ordering from a site for the first time, the new address form should appear at the top of the page. If the customer has stored addresses, the link at the top of the page will scroll the customer to the right place on the page. To make the form for entering a new address easy to use, do the following:

  • Build a simple GRID LAYOUT (I1) with all of the field labels right-aligned along a single grid line, and all of the text entry fields in a single column left-aligned along the same grid line. This arrangement helps people scan the labels and fields (see the new shipping address form in Figure F4.1).

Figure F4.1. Half.com employs an address book and provides a simple, clean, single-column form for entering a new address.

  • Keep the number of fields to a minimum to simplify data entry.

  • Keep labels and instructions short because customers tend to skim forms and resort to reading only when necessary.
