Set Expectations about Availability

Customers become frustrated when they add products to their shopping carts and find out later that the items are not available. For a Web site to reflect product availability in the shopping cart, however, inventory management software must be integrated with the Web server software. Set up business rules to automatically remove products from the Web servers when stock on hand drops below a certain level. Include a buffer in case multiple customers pick the same option at the same time. Keep track of products and product option availability.

Set customers' expectations as well as you can, either with high precision, such as “Ships in 24 hours,” or with less precision, such as “Usually ships in 3–6 days.” The precision factor depends on the amount of volume your business does and the inventory kept on hand.
