Recognize Holidays, Customs, and Nonverbal Communication

Not every holiday in one country is a holiday abroad. That means you will need staff for vital services like customer support on holidays, or staff who reside in the regions that you support.

Other local customs to be aware of include color use. For example, sites targeted toward China or Taiwan should be careful of how white is used because it is the color of mourning there. Colors, images, and icons that have one meaning in one cultural context may be offensive in another. Do not discount the existence of these attributes as unsophisticated design foibles of the uninitiated. Take the time to understand the value of specific color choices and icons. In some cases those colors and icons contribute a great deal to brand identity and add a local feel. There will be a fine balance between global structure and local appeal.
