Different Visitors Have Different Needs

Students, parents, and mentors need basic information about an educational institution—from an overview of the institution's policies, to details about its curriculum and schedules. The same might be true for potential students, potential and current teachers, potential and current employees, and researchers and students at other institutions. Finally, educational institutions need to maintain a lifelong relationship with their alumni. The needs of these groups vary, and an educational site must provide answers (see Figure A8.2). The solutions that we derive from these questions and tasks are listed in Table A8.1.

Figure A8.2. The designers of Carnegie Mellon University's site did a good job of identifying its customers, including prospective students, researchers, alumni, and current students. The designers created clear links to information targeted for these different groups.
