It is a common mistake to think that VRML means “Virtual Reality Markup Language” rather than “Virtual Reality Modeling Language.”

Answer: “Markup languages” such as HTML and XML are used to define the presentation and/or structure of content (usually text and images) as interpreted by a Web browser. In a virtual reality environment a “modeling language” is used to define and construct objects, scenes, etc. that exist in that environment. Such objects must be defined in such a way that a user can “realistically” interact with them.
