Chapter 39. Unusable You > Surface Features

Surface Features

Much software development is feature-driven. In the marketplace, the one who finishes with the most or the fanciest features wins. Yet feature-laden software with attractive 3-D graphics can still be seriously deficient in user interface design. Software usability resides in the total organization of the user interface, not in how features look so much as in how features work and how they work together to make the user's job easier. Getting this right takes attention to interface architecture and attention to interface detail by everyone throughout product development.

Perhaps this is why software vendors attend so much to layout, look, and feel, not because these are so important for usability, but because these are the only things they know how to fix.
