Chapter 31. Under Pressure > Delivering Value

Delivering Value

In the meantime, the Xpedite team had turned their attention to detail onto the human factors of the user interface. While other teams were still building rather rough functionality, they were taking into account the real needs of the recycling-yard operator and delivering more useable value. Instead of standard tables and menus, they tailored their windows to the customer. The results took them from last place at the lunch break to winners before dinner.

What can we learn from the efforts of these valiant teams? More than ever it seems clear that rapid prototyping is not a substitute for a disciplined process. In fact, the combination of rapid visual development tools (see Chapter 23) with an appropriately scaled process of analysis and design is likely to be just the needed one-two punch for the challenge of too-tight deadlines. Taking the time to understand and plan saves time.
