A different picture emerges over the long haul. When teams were evaluated a year and a half later, the politicians had fallen from grace, earning the lowest performance ratings. Apparently these were teams that talked a good line but failed to produce. (Sounds like politicians everywhere, doesn't it?)

Researchers, who sometimes never got beyond information gathering, often ended up being disbanded by management. Isolationist teams turned out to be a mixed bag. Most of these self-contained groups failed miserably, but a few were outstanding successes. Keeping your team of crack coders insulated from the rest of the company may look like a good way to concentrate on the end product, but it could be one of those high-risk, high-payoff maneuvers.
