Chapter 58. In Training > Continuous Improvement

Continuous Improvement

Books, courses, conferences, and new software are what keep professionals sailing smoothly through turbulent waters. If cutbacks and business process reengineering or a missed funding cycle have decimated the company training budget, then you may need to recreate the budget out of your own pocket. It is an investment in yourself and your future. You can't lose. It reduces the risk of falling on the wrong side of the downsizing scythe should it ever swing again. In any case, it increases your chances on the open job market or helps in launching your own new dot.com enterprise.

The problem is that so many organizations and professionals think of education as something that happens once, when we are young, and of training as a form of sporadic punctuation afterwards. In truth, the modern collective objectives of organizational learning and continuous process improvement apply to the people in organizations as well as to the corporate body. Professionals with staying power are always in training, continually upgrading skills and adding to their professional repertoires.
