So I told him. “Objects,” I whispered, picturing Dustin Hoffman in a scene from The Graduate. If you are not doing objects, I continued, you will be. Or you will be among those watching the mainstream move on across the sands, leaving behind a shrinking pool of opportunities. I also talked about visual development. I even suggested there were things to be learned from embedded systems programming. I am a trouble maker.

I do not think he really wanted to hear any of this. He didn't want to spend his own money on his own future, and he really didn't want to learn anything new. He was hoping for something reassuring—perhaps some secret incantation to stem the rising tide of trends that were lapping at his boots or perhaps a dinghy in which to stay afloat just a little longer.
