Chapter 41. In Service > Out of Service

Out of Service

The screen on the first ATM displayed an “out-of-service” message, so I moved to the next one, an ancient looking beast with a one-line, gas-plasma display telling me to insert my card. I searched for the slot. With no indication of the correct way to insert the card, it took me three tries before the hidden rollers sucked my card into the machine. I entered my PIN on request, asked for cash, keyed the account type, entered the amount, and verified by hitting the “OK” key. Nothing. After a considerable delay, I read a message saying that the action was not activated for this account; I was directed to consult my bank service representative.

I had no idea what the message meant. Maybe I had entered the wrong PIN or made some other silly mistake. I tried again as the queue behind me grew. No luck. Same thing at another machine. Finally I went into a branch office of my bank where the service representative at the enquiries counter greeted me with a terse, “Yes?”
