Chapter 52. Future Faces > Control Return

Control Return

Knowledge capes or computer bracelets, word processors that rewrite your prose or software that figures out who you are—perhaps so much of this is so far in the future that we can rest easy in the knowledge that, like predicting the halting of a Turing machine, some problems are intractable in theory or in practice even if they are easy to describe. If the giant software houses can't build a presentation package without memory leaks or an operating system that doesn't flush itself into blank-screen oblivion, do we need to worry whether they'll be able to do a credible job creating software intelligence or programmed intimacy?

Alas, in the meantime the GUI designers, like fashion designers, often seem more interested in cosmetics than capabilities. Flexible interfaces adjust to the user by customization of the inconsequential. You can choose almost any color scheme you want, but don't expect accommodation to real needs and differences in working styles.
