Chapter 54. Change Agents > Vital Visionaries

Vital Visionaries

Visionary leaders have played highly visible and important roles in numerous companies in the software industry, but not all groups respond to the charismatic appeal of such leaders. In some companies, though, the dominant guiding force is a shared vision that keeps people lined up and pointing in the same direction. Members of these software development teams, knowing just what is needed to turn vision into reality, are able to work with smooth, parallel efficiency.

Where alignment with a shared vision is an important factor in everyday operation, the most effective change agents are likely to be visionaries themselves, missionaries who can draw the coding crowd into sharing their visions of a better method or of defect-free software. They are technical evangelists who stir up personal commitment to a new mission or a new image of the organization. Once committed and aligned with this new vision, the working developers themselves effect the transition—in the same quietly efficient way that they build software.
