Chapter 52. Future Faces

What color is your PC? Does your laptop make a fashion statement? My road horse is a dark, boring gray, and my office machine is the usual grayish-tan color sometimes called “putty” by office furniture stores. But there is hope. A new line of multimedia PCs with built-in radio, television, and VCR—true “information appliances”—will come in various bright fashion colors. Might they clash with our other household appliances, which are mostly bone white or black anodized aluminum? Don't ask.

Long ago and far away, some slide rules came with a leather carrying case that clipped to a belt, but nobody actually wore them. That was then, what next? Wearable computers and computers as fashion accessories. That, according to the keynote speaker at a conference on computer–human interfaces, is what the bright minds that gave the world the computer for the rest of us are now fantasizing.
