HANDS-ON: SPANISH > PREPARATION

PREPARATION

Before you can budget your project, you need to know how many words are to be translated. Don’t rely on your word processor for counting words, as it will count everything, including HTML tags. Instead, use a software application that counts only the text between the tags. One widely used tool is WebBudget (you can download a free version at www.webbudget.com). WebBudget analyzes the HTML page by parsing out only the text to be translated, and then counting that text.

WebBudget Basics

Although nearly any word processing application can give you a word count, WebBudget is designed specifically for the requirements of translators and translation vendors. It parses out all the words in HTML documents that do not need translating—such as META, BODY, TABLE, and FONT—and counts just the words that do need to be translated. Using the free trial version downloaded from www.webbudget.com, you simply open the web page and the HTML code appears on the left side of the screen, as shown in Figure 7. You then click the Process button, and the parsed text appears on the right side of the page, as shown in Figure 8.

Figure 7. First, open the web page on which you want to do a word count.

Figure 8. Then click Process, and all non-translatable text is parsed out. This is the text that is counted.
