HANDS-ON: SPANISH > FIRST THOUGHTS

FIRST THOUGHTS

Sometimes the best way to learn how to do something is to jump right in and try it yourself. The Hands-On chapters in this book are designed to ease you into web localization, beginning with Spanish and graduating to increasingly challenging languages. The focus of these chapters is on the technical and logistical challenges of web localization.

The source web page (see Figure 2) is about as simple as a web page can get. There is no functionality and only one graphic (used for the navigation bar). The text of the web page is the “Tower of Babel” passage from the Bible. Although there’s a certain irony to translating this passage into multiple languages, it was chosen for practical reasons. Because the Bible is one of the most translated works in the world, you’ll have little trouble locating this passage in practically any language; this will save you the trouble (and expense) of actually hiring a translator or editor if you want to try these exercises on your own. The text for most of the Hands-On chapters has been taken from the Bible Gateway at http://bible.gospelcom.net. Although this method bypasses the need for a translator, I’ve still gone through the process of hiring a translator and editor.
