HANDS-ON: RUSSIAN > HOW TO CREATE A RUSSIAN GRAPHIC

HOW TO CREATE A RUSSIAN GRAPHIC

To display accented characters on the Russian page, they must be embedded in graphics; this includes the Français and Español links. However, you also need to consider how you’re going to display the Pycckий link to the Russian page on the Latin 1 web pages. Therefore, it makes sense to create three graphics. For the French and the Spanish text, this is a simple matter of copying and pasting the text into a graphic. For the Russian graphic, however, the Cyrillic characters are a lot more challenging. Word 2000 handles Cyrillic characters just fine, but many software applications, such as Photoshop 6, Dreamweaver 4, and Illustrator 10, do not. So for this evercise, you’ll try two different methods that assume you don’t have the latest software and aren’t going to buy Russian software.

Method 1: Word and SnagIt

Copy and paste the French, Spanish, and Russian text into Word 2000, and then use SnagIt (or another screen-capturing utility) to take a picture of that image. Save the screen grab as a GIF file to create a graphic for the French, Spanish, and Russian links, as shown in Figure 11. A quick alternative to using screen-capturing software is to press Alt+Print Screen on a Windows system. This key combination captures a picture of the screen in bitmap format. You can then paste it into a graphics application and edit it as needed; it’s a more cumbersome process than using SnagIt, but the end result is the same.
