HANDS-ON: RUSSIAN > WHICH CHARACTER SET?

WHICH CHARACTER SET?

A Russian web page can be created using any of the following character sets:

  • KOI8-R: This cryptic label is the Russian acronym for “Code for Information Exchange, 8 bit.” This character set, developed in Russia, was the dominant character set for a long time.

  • Windows 1251: Commonly called Cyrillic Windows, 1251 is a Windows Codepage similar in nature to Codepage 1252 for Latin characters. As Windows has taken over in Russia, so has 1251.

  • ISO 8859-5: The international standard, this 8-bit character set is much like ISO 8859-1. Unlike 8859-1, however, it hasn’t been widely embraced in the technical community.

  • Unicode: This super-character set is still not widely used on the Internet because older browsers do not recognize it.
