Appendix E. ENCODINGS

The chart in this appendix includes some of the more common encodings, or “charsets,” used to represent languages. Charsets are included in <META> tags within HTML documents, as well as in header files sent between servers, web browsers, and email clients. The purpose of the charset is to ensure that all software applications understand the encoding of the text so that they can properly manipulate and display it.

In an HTML file, the charset declaration should appear in a <META> tag, as close to the top of the page as possible. Most English-language web developers should be accustomed to the following <META> tag:
