Chapter 12. CREATING MULTILINGUAL CONTEN... > THE GOLDEN AGE OF MULTILINGUAL SOFTW...

THE GOLDEN AGE OF MULTILINGUAL SOFTWARE

We stand at the threshold of the age of Unicode-friendly software. Because Unicode supports all major languages, any software application that supports Unicode will support your web localization efforts. Unfortunately, not all software fully supports Unicode. Not yet, at least. Although Windows 98 provided partial Unicode support, it wasn’t until 2000 and XP that Microsoft offered native Unicode support for consumers. Today, Microsoft offers full support for Unicode in not only its operating system, but also its Office suite and FrontPage web development software. Apple also offers full Unicode support, but because of its low penetration worldwide, the focus in this chapter will be primarily on Windows applications.

For more information on Unicode, see “HANDS-ON: UNICODE.”
