OF TRANSLATORS AND MACHINE TRANSLATORS

All this talk about machine translation and the march of technology can make translators a little nervous. It’s not easy working in a profession where so many companies want to replace you with computers, but translators need not worry. Just as desktop publishing tools didn’t put designers out of business 15 years ago, computer-aided translation tools won’t put translators out of business. If anything, these tools will make the translators who know how to use them more valuable, not less. Even machine translation, though it has clearly found a growing niche, isn’t likely to endanger human translators. Ironically, it too could make the services of translators that much more valuable. As more people come to rely on Babel Fish, they will come to realize the limitations of computers and the importance of the human touch.
