Appendix C. CHARACTER ENTITIES

Appendix C. CHARACTER ENTITIES

Character entities allow you to display a character on a web page without actually inputting that character. The need for entities arose during the days when ASCII ruled the Internet. Because the ASCII character set was so limited (see Figure C.1), web developers needed a way to represent everything from accented characters to the copyright symbol. With character entities, you could instruct web browsers to display non-ASCII characters.

Figure C.1. Character entities helped accommodate the inherent limitations of ASCII.
