What Is ColdFusion?

As the Web has become more pervasive in the business world, developers have come under increased pressure to build applications that support their companies'mission-critical business functions. As with any Web-based deliverable, these applications need "to be done yesterday" and also are expected to scale effortlessly with the growth of the business. These stringent requirements have compelled developers to seek development environments in which they can quickly build, test, and deploy the applications their companies need.

Allaire's ColdFusion—currently in version 4.5—continues to be a favorite application-development platform among Web programmers who need to rapidly deploy complex, interactive sites. Figure 33.1 shows an overview of how ColdFusion works with your Web server.
