The Future

You might have read in various magazine or newspaper articles that there has been a lot of hype about XML. As you read Part II and began to see how some of the ways of producing synergy between the members of the XML family can be exploited, you probably began to realize that some of the excitement surrounding XML is well justified. Some of the potential cannot yet be delivered. Some of the standards haven't been fully defined yet. Some of the tools to exploit that potential synergy haven't been released yet. The mindset of many developers hasn't yet made the adaptations necessary to work with XML in such a way as to make it work productively. But that is a transitional stage in the application of XML to a wider stage.

The power of the XML family of technologies is likely to be fully released when the technology matures a little more, not least when some of the key specifications, such as XML Schema, are finally released as a W3C Recommendation. In parallel with that, the potential of bringing graphics under programmatic control that is an open standard and that can be manipulated using text files is likely to bring a huge and exciting range of new applications to the Web.
