Part VII: Appendixes > How This Reference Is Organized

How This Reference Is Organized

The first part of this reference is organized by object, with properties and methods listed by the object to which they apply. It covers most of the objects included in the Document Object Model supported by the most common versions of JavaScript. The second part covers independent functions in JavaScript not connected with a particular object, as well as operators in JavaScript.

Note that at the time of this writing, at least five "current" versions of JavaScript are extant. The standard for JavaScript is the ECMA standard ECMA-262. Netscape has JavaScript 1.3 (release) and 1.5 (beta, in the preview release of Navigator 6). Microsoft has the two releases (5.1 and 5.5) versions of its own JavaScript implementation, JScript. In this appendix, the most common and useful elements of each of these versions will be covered.
