Chapter 26. Advanced Netscape Dynamic HTML > Dynamic HTML with Navigator 6

Dynamic HTML with Navigator 6

With the release of Navigator 6, Netscape completely changed the direction of its browser. The underlying rendering engine of the browser was redesigned from the ground up, development of the browser was done on the open-source model, and—most importantly for the purposes of the discussion in this chapter—Netscape moved its support for HTML, Dynamic HTML, style sheets, the Document Object Model, and other technologies to be completely standards based. So, the proprietary <layer> element and layer object of Navigator 4 is no longer supported, and many of the restrictions of Navigator 4's Dynamic HTML implementation are removed.

Because of the newness of both the World Wide Web Consortium's Document Object Model standards and the Navigator 6 browser (it is still in preview release at the time of this writing), development targeting this browser is still in its early stages. However, as we will see in the next chapter, because Internet Explorer 5 has fairly good support for the DOM and style sheet standards, developing Dynamic HTML Web pages for both Internet Explorer 5 and Navigator 6 will be easier than doing the same for earlier versions of each browser.
