Chapter 23. XHTML Basic > What Is XHTML Basic?

What Is XHTML Basic?

In upcoming chapters, I'm going to delve more deeply into how to design for alternative devices. I'll take a look in great detail as to what they are, why they're important, and the various XML and related technologies that are associated with them.

XHTML 1.0 exists as a means of reformulating HTML as an XHTML document. One of the predominant reasons for doing this is to have the ability to extend XHTML to accommodate alternative devices. Presently, this is seen most clearly in XHTML 1.1, which at the time of this writing is not yet a standard (but it might be at the time you're reading this book—be sure to check with the World Wide Web Consortium for details).
