Troubleshooting

Resolution

I've looked at my server statistics, and determined that 80% of my audience is visiting at 800× 600 resolution. How can I confidently design my fixed designs for this resolution?

Ultimately, the decision rests with you. However, consider that if you're getting 100 people visiting your site a day, that's 20 people that might see a horizontal scroll. If you have 1,000 people—that's 200 people seeing the unwanted scroll! If you're comfortable with this, go for it. I personally am not comfortable and use the techniques described in Chapter 14, "Laying Out Tables Within XHTML Documents," to improve the user experience of my fixed designs. The other option is to use a JavaScript detect and route.
