Tools for Creating and Playing SMIL Documents

Even though we currently don't have full, integrated browser implementation of SMIL documents, there are a number of environments available right now that use SMIL to assist in synchronizing multimedia. In this section I'm going to look at two of the most popular providers of multimedia content for the Web: RealNetworks and Apple QuickTime.

RealNetworks Embraces SMIL

The RealNetworks family of authoring tools and players are widespread in the online universe. RealNetworks pioneered the online streaming format when it introduced RealAudio in 1997. Since that initial offering, Real has added streaming text and video capabilities and currently boasts more than 100 million downloads of its popular player. Real also was one ofSMIL's earliest proponents, and fully incorporated SMIL capability in its G2 Player technology.
