File Directory Structure

As you already have noticed, working locally but thinking for the long term is a natural way to avoid problems. In terms of directory structure, it's good to set up a system that you can use consistently, whether you are managing your documents locally or on a server.

Think of directories as folders, and vice-versa. Depending on what operating system you're using, they are conceptually one and the same. Use the guidelines set out earlier for filenames for naming directories, helping you to avoid problems with naming that arise across platforms. Folder names should never have a dot or a filename suffix.
