Chapter 8. Managing XHTML Documents Locally > The Importance of File Management

The Importance of File Management

Although this subject might seem quite basic to the intermediate reader, the reality is that significant problems arise when files are named improperly. The reason this is such a common occurrence is that many computer professionals are accustomed to working on one primary platform. For example, the designers among you will likely be most familiar with Macintosh computers, die-hard programmers and system administrators with UNIX and Linux, and IT professionals with Windows NT and Windows related software. Hobbyists also will typically fall into the Mac or Windows camps.

Files are managed differently on each platform. However, for files to be correctly rendered in a browser or located properly on a Web server, those files—and the directories in which they reside—must adhere to specific rules to be readable across all platforms. This chapter will review some file basics, and provide you with tips that will help reduce problems arising from cross-platform naming differences.
