The anchor Element

If the essence of the Web can be defined as linking, the essence of linking can most certainly be exemplified by the XHTML element at its core—the anchor, which uses the <a> . . . </a> anchor tags.

This element is what allows one XHTML document to attach, or anchor itself, to another. That other document can be nearby, or it can be far away—much like my friends Joe and Jo. If each had a Web site located in his native area, those sites could be attached, or anchored, to each other using the anchor element.
