Chapter 9. Formatting Text in XHTML > Designing for the Real World

Designing for the Real World

Beyond Black And White

Choosing a palette for your Web site goes beyond choosing colors that work well together. Your color choices also work in conjunction with your images to create a tone for the site. If you're developing a site for "Sunny Days Farms," using blacks and grays would be incongruous with the name of the farm and the image it is likely to want to project.

A better example of how background and text colors can set a tone is funschool.com, a site with activities and games for children. In keeping with the name of the site and its target audience, the colors are bright and fun. There are more colors on the screen than I generally recommend, but they are used to good effect. When you enter, you immediately know that you are on a family site.
