Reading the XHTML DTDs

As an XHTML developer, you might want to become familiar with the XHTML DTDs and what they contain. Although reading XML DTDs can seem intimidating at first, the concepts are actually quite simple and you can learn about the structure of the language by examining the formal syntax definitions. As the authoritative source on XHTML 1.0, the XHTML DTDs can help you understand validation errors and, if you want to extend the language by adding (or removing) elements, you will need to understand how the DTDs are structured.

Downloading the XHTML DTDs

To work with the XHTML DTDs, you'll want to have your own copy of the DTDs. You can read them online, or you can download them to your hard drive. I recommend keeping a local version so that you can read it whenever you like as well as being able to modify it yourself, as you'll do later in this chapter.
