Special Characters

There is a subset of information in XHTML that is referred to as the "special character set." This is XHTML syntax that creates punctuation and symbols necessary to content formatting.

Interestingly, many WYSIWYG programs always use special characters to invoke punctuation marks such as parentheses, quotations, or brackets. However, many hand coders simply type the punctuation and rarely is there any problem with a browser interpreting the ASCII, or text-based, character.
