Document Conformance and Document Type Definitions

In Chapter 2, "XHTML Foundations," I revisited the HTML 4.01 standard, where I reviewed conformance concepts and Document Type Definitions allowed within HTML 4.01. The information in this section will be very familiar to you now, as XHTML 1.0 builds heavily on the concepts in HTML 4.01, but with the influence of XML.

A conforming document is one that adheres to all the rules of the vocabulary as set forth by the standards committee. In the case of XHTML 1.0, there are several rules to which a document must conform. Within conformance rules are specific vocabularies that define the individual language of the document.
