Portable Network Graphics (PNG)

The PNG graphics format was defined during 1995–1996 to overcome copyright issues surrounding the GIF format at the time. However, aside from the goal of creating a public domain image format, the developers also attempted to improve upon the standard set by GIF. This has resulted in a number of enhanced features:

  • indexed color, grayscale, and truecolor image support

  • from 1–16 bit depth

  • alpha channel for transparency

  • better interlacing, resulting in faster display of a usable image
