Chapter 28. Common Web Graphic Formats > Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG...

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG)

Frustrated with the limitations of GIFs, a group of photographic experts went to work on compression methods that would allow high quality compression while retaining millions of colors. The results are what we know today as Joint Photographic Experts Group(JPEG, also written JPG).

Note

The appropriate file extension, or suffix, for JPEG files is .jpg. There's a lot of confusion around this issue, because of the JPEG name. Always follow standard filenaming conventions and use the .jpg suffix for all JPEG images.

→ For more information on naming conventions, see Chapter 8, "Managing XHTML Documents Locally".
