Chapter 31. Audio and Video > Downloadable File Formats

Downloadable File Formats

There are two methods for delivering audio and video to your audience—downloading and streaming. Downloadable files are ones that are completely loaded on to the user's hard drive before they are played. Streaming files are delivered to the browser in a somewhat steady stream of information.

With streaming media, the user does not need to wait for the entire file to be received before a player begins to playback the source. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. This chapter section focuses on downloadable formats, with streaming media discussed in Chapter 32, "Streaming Multimedia."
