Chapter 17. Working with Frames > Designing for the Real World

Designing for the Real World

Building Accessible Framed Pages

You'll do this using the <NOFRAMES> tag, as described earlier in the chapter. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Create a frameset in your HTML editor:

    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Frame with NOFRAMES Element</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <FRAMESET frameborder="0" framespacing="0" border="0" cols="240, *">
    <FRAME src="menu.html" marginheight="5" marginwidth="5" noresize scrolling=
    "auto">
    <FRAME src="main.html" name="right" marginheight="15" marginwidth="15"
    noresize scrolling="auto">
    </FRAMESET>
    </HTML>

  2. Add the <NOFRAMES> tag and its companion </NOFRAMES> in the following fashion:

    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Frames with NOFRAMES Element</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <FRAMESET frameborder="0" framespacing="0" border="0" cols="240, *">
    <FRAME src="menu.html" marginheight="5" marginwidth="5" noresize scrolling=
    "auto">
    <FRAME src="main.html" name="right" marginheight="15" marginwidth="15"
    noresize scrolling="auto">
    </FRAMESET>
    <NOFRAMES>
    </NOFRAMES>
    </HTML>

  3. Now add all the HTML syntax necessary to create a fully functional page within the <NOFRAMES> tag:

    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Frames with NOFRAMES Element</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <FRAMESET frameborder="0" framespacing="0" border="0" cols="240, *">
    <FRAME src="menu.html" marginheight="5" marginwidth="5" noresize scrolling=
    "auto">
    <FRAME src="main.html" name="right" marginheight="15" marginwidth="15"
    noresize scrolling="auto">
    </FRAMESET>
    <NOFRAMES>
    <BODY>
    Welcome. We're happy to provide this non-frames access to our Web site. If you
    prefer to view our site using frames, please upgrade your browser to a recent
    one that fully supports frames. Otherwise, please visit our <A
    href="index_noframes.html">non-framed</A> version of this site.
    </BODY>
    </NOFRAMES>
    </HTML>

  4. Save the page. You've now made the page completely accessible to non-frame browsers.
