Troubleshooting

Dynamically Speaking

Q1:At some point, trying to use dynamic technologies such as DHTML seems really futile because I want pages that are accessible and cross-platform-compatible. How do I remedy this and still keep up with technological trends?
A1: I have three answers to this dilemma.
  • Experiment as much as you like on home pages and private pages. Reserve careful cross-browser code for professional, widely accessed public pages.

  • Sniff-and-route using JavaScript, or have a subtle note on your page that allows individuals to make a choice based on their browser type.

  • Don't use DHTML. Great pages don't have to embrace every available technology! In fact, I am from the school that says you can create better, more elegant Web sites if you think carefully about what it is you're using and why. If you have a really good reason to use a given technology, then use it! But don't feel you should just because you can.
